Walter was born about 1458 in Eardisley, Herefordshire, England, the son of James de Baskerville and Sibil Devereux.

He died on 5 SEP 1508 in Eardisley, Herefordshire, England.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Anne ferch Morgan, who he married in ABT 1480. The place has not been found. Their four known children were James (c1482-1546), John (c1485-?), Elizabeth (c1488-?) and Thomas (c1490-1551).

His second wife was Elizabeth verch Milo ap Harry “Henry”, who he married in ABT 1491. The place has not been found. Their five known children were Philip (c1490-?), Edward (c1502-?), James (c1503-<1563), William (1503-?) and Simon (<1508->1552).

Biography

Walter Baskerville was the eldest son of Sir James Baskerville and Sibyl Devereux, daughter of a Sir Walter Devereux.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

The Inquisition Post Mortem for his father James Baskerville, knight, in 1499 indicated that Walter Baskerville esquire was his son and heir and aged 40 or more.[1]

His first wife was Anne, daughter of Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip, of Pencoyd.[3][5][6][7][8][9][11][12]

His second wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Milo ap Harry of Bacton, Herefordshire, and Joan, daughter of Harry Stradling.[6][7][13] Walter Baskerville was a Supervisor of the will of Milo ap Harry, the will dated 10 Feb 1488.[14]

The Inquisition Post Mortem for Sir James Baskerville in 1499[1] referred to his son Walter Baskerville and also to the following sons of Walter Baskerville namely: James Baskirvile, elder son of Walter; "John Baskirvile, whole brother of the said James the son"; "Philip Baskirvile and Thomas Baskirvile, third and fourth sons of the said Walter".

The Baskerville Pedigree in the Visitation of Herefordshire stated that Sir Walter Baskervile was the son of Sir James Baskervile and 'Sybil' daughter of Sir Walter Devereux. It noted that Sir Walter Baskerville had four sons by a daughter of 'Morgan John ap Philipes of Pencoed', namely: Sir James, John, Sir Philip and Thomas, and a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Senacre Delabere.[3]

The Visitation of Hampshire[5] showed two Philip Baskervilles as sons of Sir Walter, one by his first wife and one by his second wife. The Philip by Sir Walter's first wife was noted as the third son and had married Anne, daughter of John Hamlyn of Wiltshire. Interestingly the arms of Baskerville shown in the Visitation included a mullet suggesting the arms of a third son of the main line.

The Baskerville Pedigree in Robinson[6] stated that Sir Walter Baskerville was the son of Sir James Baskerville and 'Isabella', daughter of Walter Devereux . It recorded that Sir Walter married Anne daughter of Morgan ap Jenkyn ap Philip, of Pencoyd, and their children were: James, John, Thomas and Elizabeth: and by his second marriage to Elizabeth daughter of Milo ap Harry, of Poston, his children were Philip and Simon.

The Baskerville Pedigree in Burke[8] stated that Walter Baskerville was the son of Sir James Baskerville and Sibill, daughter of Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers of Chartley. The Pedigree also stated that Sir Walter had three sons and a daughter by his first marriage to Anne daughter of Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip, of Pencoyd, namely: James, John, Thomas and Elizabeth: and five sons by his second marriage to Elizabeth daughter of Henry ap Milo ap Harry, of Poston, namely; Philip, Edward, William, James and Simon.

Heraldic Illustrations by Burke and Burke[17] only listed two sons of Sir Walter Baskerville, namely Sir James Baskerville and a Simon Baskerville.

The memorial inscription for Simon Baskerville at Winterbourne Bassett, Wiltshire, stated that he was the 8th son of Sir Walter Baskerville of Earsley in the County of Hereford.[18][19]

24 Feb 1497/1498: Commission of Walter Baskervile Esq and others to investigate the escapes of prisoners in Herefordshire.[20]

20 Jan 1500/1501: Noted with James Baskervyle, knight [presumably his father, then deceased], and others that he had been enfeoffed of the manor of Boughrede in the Marches of Wales but the manor had been taken into the hands of the king.[21]

He was made Knight of the Bath at the marriage of Prince Arthur on 14 Nov 1501.[11][22]

22 Dec 1505: Presentation of Owen Poole at Whitney, Herefordshire, by the foeffes of the Lordship of Whitney which included Sir Walter Baskerville.[24]

The Inquisition Post Mortem of Sir Walter Baskerville stated that he died on 05 Sep 1508.[2]

It is possible he was the Sir Walter Baskerville recorded in the Obit Book of Hereford Cathedral .[25]

Inquisition Post Mortem of Walter Baskervyle, knight, following a Writ of 13 October, the inquisition held on 30 October, 24 Henry VII [1508].[2]

John Baskervyle, knight, was seised in fee of the under-mentioned manor and lands &c., and by his indented charter granted them to James Baskervyle, esquire, and Sibyl his wife , and the heirs of their bodies. James and Sibyl had issue Walter Baskervile, named in the writ, who on their death was seised of the said manor and lands in fee tail and died so seised.

He died 5 September last. James Baskervile, esquire, aged 26 years and more, is his son and heir.

GLOUCESTER. Manor of Combe Baskervile with the advowson of the church of the said manor, and divers lands &c. in Combe Baskervile and Wescote which are parcel of the said manor, worth 20l., held of the abbess of Syon, as of her hundred of Sloughtour, by fealty only.
