Biography

Sir John Baskerville, Knight, of Eardisley, Herefordshire

John Baskerville was a son of Richard Baskerville.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

There has been some uncertainty regarding his father. Was John the son of the Sir Richard Baskerville who died in 1374, or the son of Richard Baskerville who was born in 1369/1370 and died 1394-1395? A Plea at Michaelmas 1 Henry V [1413] by John Baskerville[1] indicated that his father was Richard Baskerville and his mother was Margaret. As Richard, father of Richard, left a widow named Joan and not Margaret, then Margaret was the wife of the younger Richard Baskerville, hence the most plausible father of John was the Richard Baskerville who was born in 1369/1370 and who died 1394-1395.

The year of birth of John Baskerville is unknown and is assumed to be c 1390.

Mother, Margaret

The Plea of 1412/1413[1] indicates that the mother of John Baskerville was named Margaret and she subsequently married a Nicholas de Montgomery.

Margaret, the widow of Nicholas Montgomery, was living on 20 Feb 1436/1437.[10] The entry indicates a connection with the Brugge family.

It is unlikely she was 'Margery/Margaret' Foljambe, daughter of Sir Godfrey Foljambe. Margaret Foljambe may have been an earlier wife of Nicholas de Montgomery.[11][12][13]

It has been suggested that the Margaret who married Richard Baskerville may have been a Margaret de Ardern, daughter of Sir Henry de Ardern.[14] This was based on:

13 Dec 1381: "Grant to Henry de Ardern, ‘chivaler’, and John Wydevyle of the county of Northampton, .. of the marriage of Richard, son and heir of Richard Baskervyll, a minor in the king’s ward for 100 marks .."[15]

A number of Baskerville pedigrees placed John Baskerville as the son of Joan de Everingham, daughter of Adam de Everingham, of Laxton/Lexington, Nottinghamshire. However, she was clearly the wife of the Sir Richard Baskerville who died in 1374 and is therefore presumed to have been the grandmother of John Baskerville.[16][17][18][19][20]

Marriage

John Baskerville married Joan Brugge, daughter of John Brugge of Staunton, Herefordshire.[21][22][23][24][25][26] She has been recorded in a number of pedigrees[3][4][5][6][9] as Elizabeth Brugge but this appears to be an error and the only primary source[22] indicates her name was Joan.

The Inquisition Post Mortem of John Brugges[22] indicated that he died on 30 September 1436. John Baskerville, knight, was his kin and next heir, viz., son of Joan, daughter of John Brugge, and was aged 24 years and more.

The parents of John Brugge were Edmund Brugge of Staunton, Herefordshire, and Johanna Pichard.[21][27]

According to Norr[5], John Baskerville may have married second Elizabeth Eylesford/d'Eylesford. No specific sources were cited.

In the same study a panel of sixteen quarterings from an Harleian Manuscript shows the same coat this time ascribed to Lenthal.

The connection between Lenthall/Lenthal and the Baskervilles is unknown.
