Biography

Sir John Baskerville, knight, of Eardisley, Herefordshire

John Baskerville was the son and heir of Sir John Baskerville of Eardisley, Herefordshire.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

His mother was Joan Brugge, daughter of John Brugge of Letton and Staunton, Herefordshire.[11][12][13][14][15]

It has been claimed that he was born 12 February 1403[5][8] or otherwise 12 February 1408.[3][7][9] [Primary source not yet identified]

Marriage

He married Elizabeth, daughter of John Tuchet/Touchett, Lord Audley.[1][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][16][17][18][19]

In 1448 there was a complaint by Lady Baskerville of her husband's misconduct, the Bishop of Hereford was directed to institute proceedings against Sir John Baskerville and one Johanna Brayn "living together in adultery".[20] [Cited: Archbishop Stafford's Register, fol. 76.]

Norr[5] stated John Baskerville married first Cecily Devereux, daughter of Walter Devereux . However, Richardson[21] did not identify a daughter of Walter Devereux and Anne Bromwich.

Children

According to Norr[5] by his first wife Cecily he had a daughter:

It has also been claimed that a Sibyl Baskerville, daughter of Sir John had married Richard Rowden.[3][4][10] However, Norr[5] placed this Sibyl as the daughter of John Baskerville and Alice Bridges.

Career

1433: John Baskerville, knight, one of the principal inhabitants of Herefordshire.[22]

1 May 1434: John Baskervyle, knight, of Herefordshire, to take an oath to the king.[23]

1436: The Inquisition Post Mortem of John Brugges indicated that he died on 30 September 1436. John Baskerville, knight, was his kin and next heir, viz., son of Joan, daughter of John Brugge, and is aged 24 years and more.[12]

16 June 1439: John Baskervyle of Erdesleye, knight, regarding a debt.[24]

1440: Regarding Bredwardine and Weston, Herefordshire, Sir John Baskerville claimed to be the heir of William Fouleshurst with the former's lineage described as Sir John Baskerville, son of John, son of Richard, son of Richard, son of Richard brother of Walter, great great grandfather of William. However, Walter Baskerville the ancestor of Sir John Baskerville was a different Walter Baskerville to the ancestor of William Fouleshurst.[25]

14 February 1442/1443 and 16 Nov 1443: John Baskervile, Knight, recorded in connection with the manor of Heliden/Helydoun, Northamptonshire.[26][27] Hellidon had been held by William Fouleshurst at his death on 16 Oct 1439[25], William being a great grandson of Margaret Baskerville.

16 March 1443/1444: Commission to John Baskervile, knight, Ralph Baskervile and others as Justices to deliver the gaol of Hereford Castle of David ap Gruffith.[28]

2 July 1445: Commission to Sir John Baskervile, knight, Henry Oldecastell Esq, Richard Walweyn Esq, Richard Hackluyt Esq, Robert Clynton, Edmund Morys and the sheriff of Hereford to take into the King's hands all the lands of Henry, Duke of Warwick in Herefordshire and the march of Wales.[29]

1455: Sir John Baskerville held the manor of Comber Baskerville, Gloucestershire, in 1455 when he conveyed it to his son James. The manor then passed successively to James's son Sir Walter , to Walter's son James, and in 1535 to James's son James, who sold it in 1546 to William Sheldon of Beoley .[30]

Arms

The arms recorded in the Baskerville pedigree in the Visitation of Herefordshire 1569 were:[1][31]

1 & 4: Argent a chevron gules between three hurts azure [Baskerville]

2: Azure a fess ermine, in chief a label of five points Or

3: Gules a fess Or between three escallops argent [which are Pychard][11][32]

The Arms of Touchet were: Ermine, a chevron gules[33][34]

Death

Sir John Baskerville is stated to have died on 23 December 1455.[3][5][7][8][9][10]

This date has yet to be verified but presumably it will be found in the Inquisition Post Mortem.[35]
