Biography
Simon Baskerville was the 5th and last son of the marriage of Sir Walter Baskerville and his second wife Elizabeth, daughter of Henry ap Milo ap Harry, of Poston.[1][2][3][4]
-
Simon Basverville married Elizabeth, daughter of [unknown] Brand esq. of Wanborough, Wiltshire, and left three sons; William, Thomas and George.[2]
-
In 1545 "Symond Baskerfeld gentleman" was a taxpayer at Richardstone in the hundred of Selkelye, Wiltshire.[5]
Monumental Inscription
-
A monumental inscription for Simon Baskerville had existed at Winterbourne Bassett, Wiltshire. Phillipps recorded the inscription as follows:[6]
-
"Here Lyeth ye Bodie of Simon Baskerville, Esquier, ye 8 sonne of Sir Walter Baskerville, of Earsley, in the County of Hereford, knt. which Simon Married the Widow of William Hutchins of Richarston, who died in 1602."
-
However, in Aubrey's Collections for Wilts it was recorded as:[7][8]
-
“Here Lieth the body of Symon Baskerville, Esqr, sonne of Sir Walter Baskerville, of Earsley, in the County of Hereford, knight which Symon married the Widowe of William Hutchins, of Rickarston, who deceased in the yeare of our Lord God, 1552"
-
As Aubrey was making his observations in 1659-1670 while Phillipps was recording his observations some 150 years later, coupled with the fact that the earlier date is the more realistic date, then it is assumed that 1552 is the correct date. As to whether the memorial referred to Simon as being the 8th son or not, presumably Phillipps wouldn't have made it up. Perhaps Aubrey simply omitted it.
