Biography
Sibyl Devereux, daughter of a Sir Walter Devereux, knight, married Sir James Baskerville of Herefordshire, eldest son of Sir John Baskerville and Elizabeth Touchet.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
The Inquisition Post Mortem of Sir James Baskerville[9][10] indicates that his late wife was Sibilla, daughter of Walter Devereux, knight. They were married by 07 Jan 1454/1455.[10]
In the Inquisition Post Mortem for his son Sir Walter Baskerville in 1508[11] it stated that John Baskervyle, knight, was seised of the Manor of Combe Baskervile in Gloucestershire and by his indented charter granted them to James Baskervyle, esquire, and Sibyl his wife , and the heirs of their bodies. James and Sibyl had issue Walter Baskervile, named in the writ, who on their death was seised of the said manor and lands in fee tail and died so seised.
The Baskerville pedigree in the Visitation of Herefordshire[1] stated that Sir James Baskerville was the son of Sir John Baskerville and a daughter of Lord Audely. He married Sybil, daughter of Sir Walter Devereux and their children were Sir Walter Baskerville, John Baskerville, a daughter married to Roden, and Philip Baskerville.
The pedigree in the Visitations of Berkshire[12] noted that Sir James Baskerville knt of the "howse of Eardesley" marryed Sybill the daughter of Walter Devereux Lord Ferrers of Chartley.
The Baskerville pedigree in Burke[3] stated that Sir James Baskerville was the son of Sir John Baskerville and Elizabeth, daughter of John Touchet, Lord Audley. He married Sibill, daughter of Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers of Chartley. Their children were Sir Walter Baskerville, John Baskerville and Philip Baskerville.
The Baskerville pedigree in Robinson[4] stated that Sir James Baskerville was the son of Sir John Baskerville and Elizabeth, daughter of John Touchet, Lord Audley. He married Isabell, daughter of Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers. Their children were Sir Walter Baskerville, John Baskerville, Richard Baskerville, and a daughter who married Thomas ap Glyn.
According to the Rev, Watkins, Sibil was a daughter of Walter Devereux of Chartley.[5]
Sources which incorrectly state that her name was Katherine/Catherine Devereux
Katherine Devereux as the wife of Sir James Baskerville was noted by Leach Rixford[13] and the HOP Biography of Sir James Baskerville.[14]
This may stem from the Devereux pedigree in the Visitation of Warwickshire[15] which stated that a Katherine Devereux, daughter of Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers and Mary, daughter of Thomas Gray, had married a Sir James Baskerville. However, the Sir james Baskerville and Katherine Devereux noted in the pedigree were of an entirely different generation to Sir James Baskerville and Sibyl Devereux.
Norr's[7] explanation for this seems to be that a James Baskerville, son of Sir James Baskerville and Sibil Devereux, had married a Katherine Devereux. However, the Sir Walter Devereux who married Mary Gray was born around 1491.[16] It was this Sir James Baskerville's great grandson Sir James Baskerville who married a daughter of Walter Devereux and Mary Gray.
Uncertain Parents
Walter Devereux, Father of Sibil
According to The Complete Peerage[17] the first Devereux to be Lord Ferrers was Sir Walter Devereux , son of Sir Walter Devereux and Elizabeth Merbury. He married first before 26 Nov 1446 Anne, daughter of William de Ferrers of Chartley.[18]
The Stemmata Shirleiana[19], Duncomb[20] and Norr[7] noted Sibyl Devereux as the daughter of Sir Walter Devereux and Elizabeth Merbury.
Others[3][4][5][12][21] placed Sibyl as the daughter of Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers, and Anne Ferrers.
If Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers, was Sibyl's father then Sibil would presumably have been born at the earliest c 1446. However, the IPM for Sir James Baskerville[9] indicates his eldest surviving son Walter Baskerville was age 40 in 1499 and hence born around 1459, and the IPM for Walter Baskerville[11] indicates that his mother was Sibyl Devereux. Assuming the stated age of Walter Baskerville was reasonably accurate the dates are rather constrained for Sibyl Devereux to have been a daughter of Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers.
Moreover, it would appear that Anne Ferrerrs the wife of Walter Devereux, was born around 1438.[17] 17 Mar 1452/1453: Grant to Walter Devereux and Anne his wife, daughter and heir of Wiliam de Ferrariis, ‘chivaler’ .. "which Anne is aged fourteen years and more".[22] Also, In July 1450 she was recorded as age 11 years 8 months.[21] Hence, for Anne Ferrers to have been the mother of Sibyl Devereux then Sibyl would have been born c 1452 at the earliest, which does not align with Sibyl being a mother to Walter Baskerville born c 1459.
The IPMs of Sir James Baskerville[9] and his son Sir Walter Baskerville[11] noted Sir Walter Devereux, Knight, as the father of Sibyl, but did not refer to him as Lord Ferrers. The IPM of Sir James Baskerville[9] noted a gift of the manors of Staundon and Letton by Walter Devereux, knight, and John Assheby, clerk, as by their charter, 12 June, 33 Henry VI [1455], and James Baskerville and SIbyl were married by 07 Jan 1454/1455[10], suggesting that the gift was more likely to have been by the elder Sir Walter Devereux rather than the Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers. The IPM of Sir James Baskerville[9] did refer to lands held "of the heirs of William, formerly lord de Ferrariis", presumably Sir William, Lord Ferrers, but it is assumed this reflects a lease from Lord Ferrers to Sir James Baskerville.
