Biography
Philip Baskerville, son of Sir James Baskerville and Sibyl Devereux[1][2]
-
His year of birth is unknown but is presumed to be in the period 1460-1470.
-
Philip Baskerville was recorded in the Inquisition Post Mortem of his father James Baskerville, knight, in 1499.[3]
-
The Baskerville Pedigree in the Visitation of Herefordshire noted that Philip Baskerville was the third son of Sir James Baskerville and Sybil, daughter of Sir Walter Devereux. Philip's children were said to be: Thomas Baskerville of Netherwood in Thornbury, Herefordshire; James Baskerville ; Edward Baskerville ; and a daughter, Jane, married to Mervin.[1]
-
The Baskerville pedigree in the Visitations of Berkshire[4] also indicated a Philip Baskerville as the third son of Sir James Baskerville and Sybil Devereux.
-
The Baskerville Pedigree in Burke[5] agreed with the Visitations that Philip was the third son of Sir James Baskerville and Sybil Devereux. Philip's children were recorded as Thomas of Netherwood, Edward, and James of Kyre Park, Herefordshire. It was stated that James married Izead daughter of [unknown] Bulkeley esq. of Hampshire and had issue: James who was drowned in the River Wye; Catherine who married Richard Tomkyns esq. of Moninton upon Wye; an unknown daughter married to unknown Hardwicke esq. of Hardwicke; Mary married firstly to John Scudamore esq. of Thurpton, secondly to James Garnons esq. of Trelough, and thirdly to William Parry esq.; and Honor.
-
Norr[6] similarly noted Philip Baskerville as the third son of Sir James Baskerville.
Marriage
-
[uncertain] Sibilla [surname uncertain possibly Scudamore or a widow of a Scudamore][2][6]
-
The Rev Watkins[2] indicated that Philip married Sibilla, wife of John Scudamore of Kentchurch, while Norr[6] simply referred to her as Sibilla Scudamore.
Children
-
It is uncertain whether the children listed below were the children of Philip Baskerville, son of Sir James Baskerville, or his nephew, Philip Baskerville, son of Sir Walter Baskerville.
-
[uncertain] Thomas Baskerville [1][7][8]
[uncertain] James Baskerville [1][7][8]
[uncertain] Edward Baskerville [1][7][8]
[uncertain] Jane Baskerville [1][7]
-
Jane Baskerville, said to be the daughter of Philip Baskerville of Sherborne, Dorset, married William Peverell of Bradford Peverell. She then married as his first wife John Marvyn / Mervyn of Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire. She was married to John Mervyn by 1529 and had 5 sons and 8 daughters. In his will of 1566 Sir John Marvyn asked to be buried in the church at Fonthill, near his first wife.[9][10][11][12][13]
-
She has also been recorded as Jane Baskerville, daughter of 'Sir' Philip Baskerville of 'Eresley', Herefordshire, first wife of Sir John Marvyne of Fountayne.[14]
-
The funeral certificate of Sir John Mervyn included the arms of Mervyn impaled with Baskerville. The arms of Baskerville were shown with a crescent suggesting that Jane Baskerville was a descendant of a second son of the main line[12] which doesn't align with either Philip Baskerville son of Sir James Baskerville or Philip Baskerville son of Sir Walter Baskerville.
Career
-
Philip Baskervile Esq. was a witness to a grant in 1511.[15]
-
Philip Baskerville son of Sir James Baskerville was recorded in a case of 1515-1518 concerning the manor of Stretton Sugwas, Herefordshire.[16]
Philip Baskerville, son of Sir Walter Baskerville
-
There is confusion between Philip Baskerville, son of of Sir James Baskerville, and a Philip Baskerville of the subsequent generation, i.e. Philip Baskerville son of Sir Walter Baskerville, and hence nephew of Philip Baskerville son of Sir James Baskerville.
-
The year of birth of Philip the son of Sir Walter is/are unknown but most likely in the period 1484-1505. The eldest son of Sir Walter was a James Baskerville born c 1482.[17]
-
The Inquisition Post Mortem for Sir James Baskerville in 1499[3] referred to his son Walter Baskerville and also to the following sons of Walter Baskerville namely: James Baskirvile, elder son of Walter; "John Baskirvile, whole brother of the said James the son"; "Philip Baskirvile and Thomas Baskirvile, third and fourth sons of the said Walter".
-
The Baskerville Pedigree in the Visitation of Herefordshire noted 'Sir' Philip Baskerville as the third son of Sir Walter Baskerville .[1] A Philip Baskerville was not listed in Shaw's Knights of England.
-
The Visitation of Hampshire[18] showed two Philip Baskervilles as sons of Sir Walter, one by his first wife and one by his second wife. The Philip by Sir Walter's first wife was noted as the third son and had married Anne, daughter of John Hamlyn of Wiltshire. Interestingly, the arms of Baskerville depicted in the Visitation included a mullet suggesting the arms of a third son of the main line. Perhaps Philip Baskerville the third son of Sir Walter Baskerville was the informant in this case.
-
The Baskerville Pedigree in Robinson[7] did not include a Philip Baskerville as a son of Sir James Baskerville but did include a Philip Baskerville as the son of Sir Walter Baskerville. It claimed that this Philip Baskerville was by Sir Walter's second wife, that Philip was of Sherborne, Dorset, and that he had married Elizabeth, daughter of John Hamlyn of Wiltshire.
-
Norr[6] placed a Philip Baskerville as the son of Sir James Baskerville and a 'Sir' Philip Baskeville of Sherborne, Dorset, as the son of Sir Walter Baskerville.
-
A Philip Baskerfelde Esq was a plaintiff in 1508 concerning a debt owed by John Trowbrygge of Shirbourne [presumably Sherborne], tucker.[19]
-
Two records from around 1530 refer to a Philip Baskervyle. The first concerned a Philip Baskervyle Esq formerly of Sherborne [20], the second concerned a Philip Baskervyle and his wife Elizabeth in connection with the manor of Dudley, Herefordshire.[21]
