Biography
Philip Baskerville was a son of Sir Walter Baskerville.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
-
The Inquisition Post Mortem for Sir James Baskerville in 1499[7] referred to his son Walter Baskerville and also to the following sons of Walter Baskerville namely: James Baskirvile, elder son of Walter; "John Baskirvile, whole brother of the said James the son"; "Philip Baskirvile and Thomas Baskirvile, third and fourth sons of the said Walter".
-
Robinson[2] described Philip as of Sherborne, Dorset.
-
The Visitation of Hampshire[6] showed two Philip Baskervilles as sons of Sir Walter, one by his first wife and one by his second wife.
Marriage
-
In the Visitation of Hampshire[6] the Philip Baskerville by Sir Walter's first wife was noted as the third son and had married 'Anne', daughter of John Hamlyn of Wiltshire. She has also been described as Agnes Hamlyn[3][5] and Elizabeth Hamlyn.[2]
-
Agnes Hamlyn appears to have married first William Okeden of Ellingham in the county of Southampton.[8][9] William Okeden died 15 Sep 1517. His Inquisition Post Mortem of 22 Feb. 9 Henry VIII [1517/1518] recorded his son and heir was John aged 18.[10] Presuming Agnes was the mother of John Okeden then perhaps Agnes was born c 1484.
Children
-
[uncertain] John Baskerville [11][12]
-
The following may be the children of this Philip or, more likely, were the children of his uncle Philip Baskerville:
-
[uncertain] Thomas Baskerville of Netherwood[2][5]
[uncertain] Edward Baskerville[2][5]
[Uncertain James Baskerville [2]
[uncertain] Jane Baskerville[2][5]
[uncertain] William Baskerville[5]
-
Career
-
"In 1529 Philip Baskervyle and Agnes his wife created trustees of the manor of Somerley [Harbridge, Hampshire] during their lives with remainder to the heirs of Agnes. She must have been the Agnes daughter and heir of John Hamlyn who had been the wife of William Okeden of Ellingham , for in 1542, when John Okeden, William's son, was settling the manor on himself with remainder for life to his second son Henry, Philip Baskervyle was said to be holding for life from the hereditament of John."[13] [Cited Feet of Fines Hampshire Mich. 21 Hen. VIII, and Feet of Fines Hampshire. Easter 33 Hen. VIII.]
-
Perhaps he was the Philip Baskerville noted in 1550 in connection with lands in Wiltshire.[14]
-
Philip Baskerville of Bide, Wiltshire, sold lands at Fordingbridge, Hampshire, prior to 1556-1558.[15]
Death
-
Unknown.
Research Notes
-
The arms of Baskerville shown in the Visitation of Hampshire[6] included a mullet indicating the arms of a third son of the main line. The Visitation recorded the third son of Sir Walter Baskerville as Philip Baskerville. Given Philip's link with Hampshire then perhaps the informant at the Visitation was this Philip Baskerville.
