Mother of John Okeden, Jane Ogden, Richard Ogden, Elizabeth Ogden and Alice Westbury Biography

-

Agnes Hamlyn, daughter of John Hamlyn, married William Okeden of Ellingham in the county of Southampton.[1][2]

-

William Okeden died 15 Sep 1517. His Inquisition Post Mortem of 22 Feb. 9 Henry VIII [1517/1518] recorded his son and heir was John aged 18.[3]

-

Presuming Agnes Hamlyn was the mother of John Okeden then perhaps Agnes was born c 1484.

-

Agnes then appears to have married Philip Baskerville.

-

In the Baskerville pedigree in the Visitation of Hampshire[4] it was recorded that Anne, daughter of John Hamlyn of Wiltshire, married Philip Baskerville, son of Sir Walter Baskerville by his first wife Anne, daughter of Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip, of Pencoyd.

-

She has also been described as Agnes Hamlyn, wife of Philip Baskerville[5][6][7] and Elizabeth Hamlyn, wife of Philip Baskerville.[8]

-

"In 1529 Philip Baskervyle and Agnes his wife created trustees of the manor of Somerley [Harbridge, Hampshire] during their lives with remainder to the heirs of Agnes. She must have been the Agnes daughter and heir of John Hamlyn who had been the wife of William Okeden of Ellingham , for in 1542, when John Okeden, William's son, was settling the manor on himself with remainder for life to his second son Henry, Philip Baskervyle was said to be holding for life from the hereditament of John."[9] [Cited Feet of Fines Hampshire Mich. 21 Hen. VIII, and Feet of Fines Hampshire. Easter 33 Hen. VIII.]

Children:

John Okeden [1][3]

Richard Okeden[1]

Jane Okeden[1]

Elizabeth Okeden [1][10]

Alice Okeden [1]

[Uncertain] John Baskerville. According to Burke[7], Agnes Hamlyn and Philip Baskerville had a son John Baskerville who settled at Malmesbury, Wiltshire. However, there appears to be some doubt about the parentage of John Baskerville of Malmesbury.[11]

-

Agnes was presumably deceased by 1542 when John Okeden was settling the manor of Somerley on himself though it was then held by Philip Baskervyle.[9]

Research Notes

-

This person appears in The Ogden Family in America, which was published in 1907 several years after the death of principal author William Ogden Wheeler. Wheeler had not found immigrant John Ogden's English origins, but after Wheeler's death, his book was completed and published by others who "made [the] unfortunate mistake [of] unsuspectingly enlisting the assistance of Gustave Anjou, possibly the most notorious generator of fraudulent genealogical records and pedigrees of recent times."[12] As a result of Anjou's involvement, the book presented an account of English origins that cited nonexistent parish registers and other records and "have been demonstrated to be without any basis in fact,"[12] but that may be encountered in Internet genealogies and other works derived from the 1907 book.

However, the sources presented in this profile indicate that Agnes Hamlyn was indeed a real person and describe what is known about her at this time.
