Biography

Humphrey Baskerville/Bakskerfeld, Mercer, Alderman of the City of London

-

Humphrey Baskerville was born in Wolverley, Worcestershire.[1]

-

The parents of Humphrey Baskerville are unknown.

-

His year of birth is also unknown. It was not unusual for those who were apprenticed to a London Livery Company to marry after they had completed their apprenticeship of seven years. Assuming he was aged around 24 on completing his apprenticeship in 1541, then he may have been born around 1517.

-

In the Owen pedigree in the Visitation of Shropshire it was claimed that Humphrey Baskerville , husband of Jane Pakington, was the son of James Baskerville and Elizabeth, daughter of John Braynton of Stretton, Herefordshire.[2][3] However, in 1572, the will of the eldest son of Sir James Baskerville and Elizabeth Braynton, also called Sir James Baskerville, noted that his younger brother Humphrey was still living.[4] Humphrey Baskerville, Alderman of London, who married Jane Pakington died in 1564. Moreover, the brothers and sisters of Humphrey Baskerville, Alderman of London, as indicated in his will of 1564, do not match with the known children of Sir James Baskerville and Elizabeth Braynton. Humphrey Baskerville, Alderman of the City of London, was clearly not the son of Sir James Baskerville and Elizabeth Braynton.

-

Further discussion of the possible origin of Humphrey and his siblings can be found below in 'Heraldic Evidence' and in the profile of his sister Agnes Hollyman.

Career

-

Humphrey Baskerville became free of the Mercers in 1541 after an apprenticeship with Robert Chertsey.[9]

-

A Humphrey Baskerville was a Juror at the trial of Sir Nicholas Throckmorton in 1554 for complicity in the Wyatt Rebellion. Throckmorton was acquitted and the jurors were subsequently imprisoned by Mary I.[10]

-

Richard Hollyman became a freeman of the Mercers in 1557 or 1558, his Master having been Humphrey Baskerfield.[11]

-

Humphrey Baskerville was an Alderman of the City of London from 1558-1564[12], one of the Merchant Adventurers named in Queen Mary's Charter of Incorporation of 1555 , and Master of the Mercers' Company in 1560.[13]

-

Humphrey was Sheriff of London in 1561.[14]

Death and Burial

-

He died in February 1563/1564[13] and was buried in the Mercers' Chapel in London.[15]

-

Following the death of Humphrey, his wife Jane married Sir Lionel Duckett. She died around 1589/1590.[16]

Summary of the Will of Humphrey Baskerville 1564

-

In his will made on 1 September 1563 and proved on 14 March 1563/1564[1] he stated he had been born at Wolverley, Worcestershire.

-

He noted a brother William Baskerville who had predeceased him, and two other brothers, Thomas Baskerville of Upton, Worcestershire, and John Baskerville of Alvetheley, Shropshire. There were also two sisters, Alice who married a Jewkes and secondly a Sandes, and Agnes who married Humphrey Hollyman, Mercer of Blakeshall, Worcestershire.

-

Richard Hollyman mercer was to have the bringing up and keeping of his daughter Anne and Martha. His friend Thomas Heaton mercer was to have the keeping etc of his son Humfry Baskerfelde. William Leon[ar]de mercer was to have the keeping etc of his daughter Angell. His cousin John Jackson fownder was to have the finding and bringing up of his son Richard. His son in law Harry Hungate mercer was to have the finding and bringing up of his daughter Sara. While his wife was to have the finding and virtuous bringing up of "the childe she nowe goeth withall".

-

-

-

Overseers: Friends Harry Hungate, Richard Hollyman, Thomas Heaton, mercers, John Jackson fownder and William Lenarde mercer, citizens of London.

Heraldic Evidence

-

The arms of Humphrey Baskerville were described as:[15]

"Argent, on a chevron gules between three hurts a crescent or. "

-

The arms noted above including the crescent were also recorded as one of the quarterings of the arms of Owen of Condover, presumed to be the arms of Sir Roger Owen, grandson of Humphrey Baskerville.[2]

-

If the arms "Argent, on a chevron gules between three hurts a crescent or" were the arms of Humphrey Baskerville they indicate a descendency from the Baskerville family of Eardisley, Herefordshire. Given the crescent they may indicate a descent from a second son of the main line. The second son of which generation is unknown.

-

The same arms including the crescent are one of 16 quarterings of the arms of Sir Robert Whitney. Robert Whitney was a descendant of Ralph Baskerville, 2nd son of Sir John Baskerville.[17][18]

-

Was Humphrey a descendant of Ralph Baskerville of Icomb? At this time there is no evidence for a son/male line of Ralph Baskerville.

-

The same arms including the crescent are also one of the six coats on the arms of Patten of Newington, Middlesex.[19] William Patten of Newington was the son of Richard Patten, a Clothworker of London, and Grace Baskerville. Grace pre-deceased her husband Richard Patten who died in 1536. Grace Baskerville was a daughter of John Baskerville. All that is known at this time about John Baskerville is that he died before 1513, he was buried at Bermondsey Abbey, and his widow was Alice who had been married previously to Richard Crakenthorp. Interestingly another of the six coats of the arms of Patten of Newington, Middlesex, is the arms of Pychard. The arms of Pychard also appear as one of the quarterings of the arms of Baskerville of Eardisley.[20][21]

-

The same arms including the crescent are seen on the monument of Sir Mark Steward at Ely Cathedral[22], the probable grandson of Cecily Steward. Also included are the arms of Pychard.

-

Ann Baskerville, daughter of Humphrey Baskerville, Alderman of London, married Thomas Edwards. The Arms for Edwards in the Visitation of Shropshire[23] included 'Argent, on a chevron gules between three hurts' [Baskerville]. However, no crescent was recorded.

-

His daughter Angel married William Maynard. The arms of Maynard have been shown impaled with the arms of Baskerville. No crescent was recorded on the arms of Baskerville.[24]

-

NB There is no entry for Humphrey Baskerville in Grantees of Arms.[25]
