Notes

Note 1

!Stylename: Hill, William, de Neenton, de Buntingsdale [~1348-?]

!Note: On the Hill / Hull name.

This probably started with Hawkswood. The common scribal abbreviation would be Hauks or even Hask. If the scribe used a long “s” or “ſ”, which can look a lot like an “l” and minimized the “k” flourish, and as also happened a lot, barely wrote the “a”, these can end up looking exactly like Hill or Hull. At some point they likely looked at the written name and decided to use it. Of course the manor may have been on a slight hill as well.

Issue

Griffith Hull, b. 1375 Hodnet. To be merged with Griffin Hill, b. 1384 Longslow. Griffithus Hill [1] Griffith Hull was the son of William Hull. [2] Griffith in turn had a son Humphrey.

Humphrey Hill, or Hull, as the name was formerly spelt, was the son of Griffith Hull of Buntingsdale and Wlonkeslow by Margaret, or Mary, sister of Griffith Warren of Ightfield. [2] Humphrey had a son Thomas.

Thomas Hill was the son of Humphrey Hill, or Hull, by Anne, or Agnes, daughter and co-heir of John Bird of Charlton, by the niece and heiress of David de Malpas. [2] A reference to the Egerton pedigree shows that Roger, natural son of Sir William de Malpas, had issue David, father of David of Bickerton and Hampton who married Katherine, daughter of Hugh de Bickerton. [2] David of Bickerton and Hampton and his wife Katherine, daughter of Hugh de Bickerton had issue John, whose son, David, died without issue, thus leaving his aunts his co-heirs. [2]

Joan or Johanna Hill, the wife of John Gratwood, was the sister and co-heir of Sir Rowland Hill, the first Protestant Lord Mayor of London. She was the daughter of Thomas Hill of Malpas and Hodnet and his wife Margaret, daughter of Thomas Wilbraham of Woodhay, co. Chester.[2]
