Note 1

!Stylename: [Hull] / Hill, John, de Neenton [~1392]

!Note: John Hill of Bewdley is here entered as a later son of William Hill and Isabel de Buntingsdale . His estimated birth assumes William was c.44 and Isabel c.40, consistent with gentry marriage patterns of the period. Such families often produced heirs late in life, sometimes after earlier children . This placement explains how his elder brother Griffith carried the Blore/Buntingsdale estates, while John was free to establish the Bewdley/Neenton branch without overlap. Placement remains provisional, but aligns well with the generational math of the 1623 Visitation. Although the 1623 Visitation chart is styled styled as ‘of Bewdley’, John probably resided at Neenton, with Bewdley first appearing with his son’s wife.

!Note: On the Hill / Hull name.

This probably started with Hawkswood. The common scribal abbreviation would be Hauks or even Hask. If the scribe used a long “s” or “ſ”, which can look a lot like an “l” and minimized the “k” flourish, and as also happened a lot, barely wrote the “a”, these can end up looking exactly like Hill or Hull. At some point they likely looked at the written name and decided to use it. Of course the manor may have been on a slight hill as well.

BROWNE, COCKE, and HOLLAND, of Shropshire and Virginia, a proposed relationship

Posted on September 19, 2022 by genealogy1066

In any attempt to make sense of relationships between families of early Virginia settlers, it is important to understand their social norms – families had interm. in England for centuries and lived next to each other – norms that were repeated in Virginia. So, when considering the origins of John Browne, whose widow m. Richard Cocke, a reasonable hypothesis is that they knew each other in England, and would have had a number of ‘familial interconnections’, with the greater that number, the more likely the validity of the proposed relationship, and the less likely the occurrence of happenchance. John Brown’s ‘origins’ cannot be known with any certainty, yet, in the following notice, a suggestion is made, which may, to some, seem reasonable. He had, if him, connections to the Cocke, Harris, Hill, Holland, Kettelby, and Smalman families, and they with each other, thus, the criteria of the social norm which framed relationships at this time is more than adequately met.
