Notes

Note 1

!StyleName: Hodgkinson, Richard of Bishopthorpe [~1400–1461]

!Note: Probable son of William of Holgot and likely brother of John Hotchkiss [c.1400–1463] and Ralph Sr [~1400-bef 1450], based on surname variant, date, and shared probate court. One of three men listed under the rare name form "Hurtsky" in the York Medieval Probate Index, with will proved in 1461 at Bishopthorpe, Yorkshire.

Item: Will proved 4 July 1461, Bishopthorpe. Language: Latin. Reference: ProbReg 2, folio 446v.

Source: York Medieval Probate Index [1267–1500]

Date: Probate 4 Jul 1461

VariantNames: Hurtsky

Regions: Yorkshire [Bishopthorpe]

!Note: Based on probate location and matching surnames, after adjustment for transcription errors, Ralph Hodgkinson [~1400-bef 1450] and his brother Richard and Richard’s son John likely relocated to York around 1455. This timing would have allowed John to apprentice or trade alongside his father before Richard’s death in 1461. John appears in the York freemen rolls in 1467 and 1469 as both a shipman and a chapman, indicating a career progression in trade. Their move marks the establishment of a Hotchkiss / Hopkynson variant line in Yorkshire tied to merchant activity. Ralph would appear to have picked up the -son sufffic on his Hodgkinson name and moved to East Retford, where he and his wife passed away. Ralph Hotchkiss [~1400–bef 1450], presumed elder brother of Richard, is named indirectly in his son Ralph Jr.’s 1459 will. The use of ‘Hodgkinson’ or ‘Hawkson’ in both York and East Retford probate courts indicates a shared mercantile lineage adopted under the scribal norms of the region.
