Note 1

!StyleName: Hotchkiss / Hoskins, William, burgess and pannarius of Salop, Hawk of Byllwas [abt 1475 - abt 1544]

!Note: The family branch founded by William Hotchkiss, burgess and pannarius of Shrewsbury, became the family’s merchant-class engine—anchored in the urban economy, embedded in the London cloth guilds, and later contributing to the rise of the Hoskins gentry line in Surrey. William’s lineage played a vital logistical and social role within the broader Hotchkiss kin network.

As a cloth merchant, William operated trade routes between Shropshire, Wales, and London, establishing strategic waypoints in Worcester, Barford, and most importantly, Houghton Regis. These weren’t just stops—they were support hubs: places where goods could be staged, kin could rest, and family matters could be managed.

By the 1550s, William’s descendants had turned Houghton Regis into a family operations center, particularly for re-stabilizing households after maternal loss. It served not just their branch, but others—arranging rapid remarriages, supporting childbirth, and absorbing orphans when needed. This wasn’t incidental. It was the result of deliberate positioning, mercantile strength, and kinship coordination. William’s branch didn’t just move cloth—they moved people, stabilized succession, and quietly underwrote the continuity of the wider Hotchkiss line.

!Note: Roger Hodgkinson’s will of 1535 names the Hawk of Buildwas, identifying William Hotchkiss / Hoskins, burgess and pannarius of Salop, as his feudal lord. This confirms the link between the Hodgkinsons of Shifnal and William’s family through marriage: Elynoor to Robert Potters Hawk, son of William, and Syble to Richard Hochkys, also a son of William.
