Note: These locations are all clustered within about 10 miles of Barford, Warwickshire. All of these person names exist and could be the people involved. This is exactly when church records were beginning and were not yet stable, making it hard to be positive if we have the correct people, but just the existance of the names in the location makes them likely. John Brome died 1546 in Kingd Norton and would be likely to be the former land owner and father of Alice. A John Horley married another woman nearby in 1585, so someone by that name could have been Alice’s husband. An Alice Awdley died in 1604 in Mancetter, which could possibly have been her. None of this is proved, but what it does say is these names existed in this location and time. The sons of William Hotchkiss, burgess and pannarius of Salop, Hawk of Byllwas [abt 1475 - abt 1544] established a way-station in Barford by 1539 and William himself died there. From that we can give this record an estimated date of about 1550. The name given in this record is Hoggekyn Chylde. Chylde does exist as a surname, but not really at this exact location, and its use with Hoggekyn as a given name would be extremely unusual. Chylde is also used to describe the youngest child in a family and often sticks throughout their life as an identifier. That is most likely what has happened here. John, as the youngest son in the family, would have been likely to be referred to in such a manner. Of course the record date being vague, he could also have just still been a minor at the beginning of the case, but either way, it still points to John.

Note: 1. Location Bedford, Bedfordshire is 17.61 miles from All Saints Church, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. A second interpretation of this would have Her being treated while still married to her late husband while her married name was Bedford, but in Coventry, Warwickshire. This also fits well, although the John would have had to go just a bit further, 49.59 miles, for his emergency wife after Johanna apparently died a few months after childbirth, leaving him with an infant and several young children.

2. Spouse #2 = Elizabeth
