Notes

Note 1

!Stylename: Thomas Hotchkiss / Hoskins of Monmouthshire [~1500 - ~ Dec 1588]

!Note: It is most likely that the four Hotchkiss’s who were married in Cheswardine in the early 1560’s were probably siblings.

!Note: I believe this Hoskins family is related to Hotchkiss because of the similarities of their arms. I’ believe this has been proved.

!Note: Recorded in the 1524 Surrey Lay Subsidy as Thomas Hopkynson of Carshalton, taxed at £3 — a substantial amount for a yeoman or gentleman, suggesting solid means and a likely transitional phase before establishing in Monmouthshire.

!Note: Will dated and proved in 1529 at Nettlestead, Kent, likely reflects an early filing made during land acquisition or travel—common for men of property. Though Thomas did not die until 1558, this filing fits his known activity expanding family holdings into Kent.

Family and education

The Hoskins family one generation back was from Monmouthshire, with Charles Hoskins, the father of Sir Thomas Hoskins, was originally “of Trefynwy, Monmouthshire”, but accumulating his wealth as a merchant tailor in London. He married to Anne Engler, of “Reigate, Surrey,” and acquired large estates in Surrey and Kent. He does not appear to be related, or at least closely related, to an earlier serjeant-at-law, John Hoskins , born in Herefordshire and appointed serjeant-at-law in 1623, or to John Hoskin’s grandson, Sir John Hoskins, who was a master in Chancery. Trefynwy, Monmouthshire is 60.7 miles from Hawkeswood.
