Alpine was born on 7 FEB 1834 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Matheny and Mary McGregor.
He died on 25 JUN 1917 in Ringgold County, Iowa.
He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Elizabeth Reed, who he married on 16 APR 1857. The place has not been found. Their four known children were Myrtle (1857-1857), David Guy (1859-1951), William Reed (1862-1919) and Carrie (1865-1947).
His second wife was Virginia Vaughn, who he married on 19 OCT 1869 in Savannah, Missouri. Their five known children were Fredrick Charles (1870-1871), Frances Oren (1872-1873), Aldis Bird (1875-1908), Nathan Pearl (1877-?) and Orestes Cleaveland (1880-?).
