An index, most likely written long after the fact.

Note: Rushbury about 20 miles from Alveley by the very curved road, so likely half that as the crow flies. This is 1534, but I think it is just a registered will

after his first wife died - either that or it is actually him appearing for her death which could have been in 1534.

Modern English version:

[Cover] About 1534 – Edward Hotchkiss [recorded as “Haken” – a scribal form]

The contents and parcels belonging to Edward Hotchkiss, deceased, above [listed] were appraised by William [Wymer?] and

Robert Glover in the presence of John Morrys, on the first day of November in the 26th year of the reign of King Henry VIII.

[Left column – items bequeathed]

First, my gown – appraised at 2 shillings, 6 pence

One coat – appraised at 2 shillings

One girdle – appraised at 12 pence

One fine bed – appraised at 5 shillings

One cauldron – appraised at 2 shillings, 4 pence

A [maur?]* – appraised at 6 pence

My cupboard and my [lavb?]* – appraised at 2 shillings

One pot – appraised at 4 pence

One pan – appraised at 8 pence

[Right column – valuation summary]

The total amount appraised comes to 17 shillings in lawful money.

Of which the appraised goods and chattels were valued at 17 shillings, 4 pence.

*Those two odd items — “maur” and “lavb” — are worth double-checking. In some probate inventories, “maur” might be a form

of “maul” [a small hammer or mallet], and “lavb” could be a shorthand for a lavatory basin or laver. The letterforms in

this hand aren’t definitive, but the values suggest small household fixtures

rather than livestock or land.

Note: “26th year of Henry VIII” = 21 Apr 1534 – 20 Apr 1535.

Note: Children listed as: John, Symon, William, Edward.
