!Note: This is a made up story to explain how this new version of the name shows up in a quiet corner of Derbyshire. Thomas was probably the oldest son in a Hotchkiss family from York. After their father died, his younger brothers shipped south to London, but Thomas stayed in York, likely with his oldest brother Edward who accompanied him—maybe because he was already settled and used the local form “Hochkynson,” common in the Danelaw region where Scandinavians add son to their father's name. Later in life, he seems to have moved south overland and ended up in Alvaston, Derbyshire. His 1535 will, recorded under the name “Thos Huchkynson,” shows how the name shifted slightly in sound. This might be the start of a Midlands branch that came from the York family which next turned back up in London.
