Alfred was born about 1830 in Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Lawrence Phinney and Sarah Bowlby.
His wife was Mercy E. Bent, who he married on 25 NOV 1855. The place has not been found. Their two known children were Sidney (1856-?) and Adelia (1868-?).
