Lawrence was born about 1790 in Wilmot, Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Lot Phinney and Elizabeth Durland.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Caroline Morse. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. They had no known children.

His second wife was Sarah Bowlby, who he married in 1821. The place has not been found. Their nine known children were Ethlanda (1822-?), Armanilla (1824-?), Azubah (1826-?), John Sidney (1828-?), Alfred (c1830-?), Victoria Elizabeth (c1832-?), David Shaw (c1834-?), Charles Henniger (c1836-?) and Edward Hicks (c1838-?).
