He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Agnes Love, who he married on 15 FEB 1835 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Their four known children were William (1841-1915), James (c1842-1860), John (c1845-?) and Edward (c1847-<1851).
His second wife was Mary Cranston, who he married on 18 AUG 1850 in Old Monkland, Scotland. Their seven known children were Janet (1854-1933), Edward (1857-1918), Jean (1859-?), John (1860-1918), James Cranston (1862-1929), Joseph (1864-1917) and Michael (1867-1941).

Michael, also came to the United States, but did not make his home here for any considerable length of time, recrossing the ocean to England, where he died. 4. Ellen, died in Scotland; married John Hodgett, who died in New York City, New York. Joseph Hotchkiss married [first] Mary Love; [second] Mary Cranston, born in England, April 24, 1828, died March 22, 1908, daughter of James and Jennie [Moffit] Cranston, both natives of Scotland, who afterwards moved to England. Jennie Moffit was a daughter of James Moffit, a minister of the Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Children of James and Jennie [Moffit] Cranston: 1. Jane, married Thomas Sherry; they made their home in East Palestine, Ohio, where he was a miner. 2. Mary, of previous mention, the second wife of John Hotchkiss. 3. John, enlisted in the Union army at the time of the Civil War from Peoria, Illinois, and was never heard from thereafter, nor has any trace of him been found.
