(1895-1991), Carl Edward (1896-1983), Ralph A (1898-1899), Ellen M. (1899-2000), John Raymond (1901-1962), Arthur H (1903-1904), Ragnar N. (1904-1985), Edwin Clarence (1906-?), Florence Lavina (1909-?), Richard Alvin (1911-?) and Alton Leon (1913-?).

-- Among the Good Neighbors South of Town --

Among our good Swedish people who have lived in this community for more than half [a] century, is Mr. and Mrs. August E. Lindburg. We find them on their farm southeast of Osage City where they have resided all but four years of their married life. Previous to moving to their present location the Lindburgs lived on a farm northwest of Osage City.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Lindburg are natives of Sweden. Mr. Lindburg was born on October 28, 1862, in Ullevy Gardby Oland Sweden [Oland, a small island in the Baltic Sea.] He came to America in 1882, and during his first year in the states worked in the mines near New Preston, Conn., after which he came to Osage City, arriving here on December 3, 1883. He also did some mining after coming here for a short time but farming has been his chief occupation.

On June 8, 1893, Miss Jotanna Johnson and Mr. Lindburg were married in Osage City and immediately went to housekeeping northwest of Osage City. Mrs. Lindburg was born in Sweden on October 8, 1874, in Qvanum, Skaraborglan, Vastergotland, Sweden and came to America in 1892, arriving in Osage City on October 7.

Mr. and Mrs. Lindburg have reared a fine family of six sons and three daughters. The sons are Carl, Raymond, Clarence and Alton, all of Osage City; Ragnar of Lucas, and Richard of Topeka; the daughters are Mrs. Harold [Linda] Anderson, of Osage City, Ellen, teaches in Turner high school and Mrs. William [Florence] Patrick lives in Oak Grove, Mo. They are also proud grandparents of 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lindburg has three brothers, Carl and Richard Johnson, of Osage City, and Frank Johnson of Blandinsville, Ill. She also has one sister, Mrs. Catherine Anderson of Slater, Mo.

Mr. Lindburg has one sister, Miss Adeline A. Janson of Kansas City, Mo. He was a brother of the late Gust A. Johnson. [After arriving in Osage City, August E. Johnson decided there were already enough Johnsons here so he changed his name to Lindburg].

Not only has Mr. Lindburg been a successful farmer and stockman, he has replaced all of the buildings on the farm with new ones and worked for the best interests of the community. He was for many years a member of the school board of Pleasant Valley school. While his son Alton lives near the parents home and does the farming and looks after the lifestock, Mr. Lindburg takes care of the chickens and helps with the milking. He still enjoys buying and selling livestock at the Osage City Sales Pavilion. Mrs. Lindburg has also taken her place in the community and been a fine neighbor and gave a helping hand whenever needed. She is still able to do most of her housework.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Lindburg have been active members of the Osage City Grace Lutheran church for many years. Mr. Lindburg has served as a deacon in the church for many years and about a year ago rounded out thirty years as teacher of the Older Peoples' Sunday School class of the Grace Lutheran church and is still substitute teacher whenever necessary. Mrs. Lindburg is a charter member of the Dorias society and has also belonged to the Missionary society for many years and attended the organization meetings whenever possible. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lindburg may be found in the church services whenever their health and weather permit.

Mr. Lindburg, 88, and Mrs. Lindburg, 76, are enjoying fairly good health and their host of friends wishes them pleasure in the coming years. --

August Edward Lindburg was born in Ullevy, Oland, Sweden on October 28, 1862 and departed this life on July 25, 1957 at his home near Osage City at the age of 94 years, eight months and 27 days. He immigrated to America in 1882, arriving in New Preston, Connecticut. In December, 1883 he came to Osage City.

On June 8, 1893 he was married to Johanna Matilda Johnson. They located on a farm northwest of Osage City. Two years later they moved to the present home northeast of Osage. To them were born twelve children, three dying infancy. Mrs. Lindburg preceded him in death in November, 1952. He is survived by six sons, Carl, Raymond, Clarence and Alton of Osage City, Ragnar of Lucas and Richard of Topeka; three daughters, Mrs. Linda Anderson and Ellen of Osage and Mrs. Florence Patrick of Raytown, Mo.; eighteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was babtized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden at an early age and became a member of Grace Lutheran Church at Osage City where he was an active and faithful member for over 60 years serving as trustee and deacon many years and for over 30 years teaching the older members Sunday school class. He was interested in the affairs of the community and served on the school board in his district several years.

He was a kind and loving father and a good neighbor. He will be greatly missed in the family circle as well as in his church and community. He had a great patience and fortitude and truly lived a Christian life, faithfully serving his lord until the end. Peace be to his memory.

Funeral services for Mr. Lindburg were conducted on Monday afternoon at the Grace Lutheran church with Pastor Paul Bengston officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lundgren and Mr. and Mrs. Horace Kibbe sang "Safe In the Arms of Jesus" and "Abide With Me" with Mrs. Don Lofgren as the organ accompanist. Six of his grandsons served as casket bearers; Clifford Lindburg, Kenneth Lindburg, LeRoy Anderson, Merl Lindburg, Herbert Lindburg, and Don Lindburg.

Burial was made in the Union cemetery.

C. Smith and Viron Smith, of Topeka; Mrs. G. A. Anderson, of Slater, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Palmquist and Mrs. B. L. Short, Turner; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hendrickson, of Littleton, Colorado; Merl Lindburg, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Clifford Lindburg, of Hutchinson. --
