In the Name of god Amen the xxixth day of October the yere of our lord god Mᵗⁿ V and viij. I

John Hawkyns preest beyng in body and hole of my mynde make my testament and last wyll in manᵉⁿ and forme folowyng

first I bequeth my soule to almyghty god my maker to his blessed moder our lady saynt mary and to all the holy

company of heven and my body to be buryed in the northe chauncell of saynt Gylles of Reynham in the cowntie of

Essex. Item I bequeth to the hyghe aulter of the sayd churche iiiy s. Itm to the worke of the sayd churche of Saynt Paul at London

vjs viijd. It I geve to the rep’acions of the churche of Saynt Peter at Westm’ster, in the family countie of Essex my coffer

that Markus Carder hath in his keeping with all that ys therin. It[em] I give to Cathryn my gowen that ys worn by honest[y].

It[em] I geve to Alice her daughter one of my Best gowens of those that might be in my chamber in ffancher Lane. Item to

Margaret Cony that Ke’pith me my fullest gowens that I have here. Item I gebt to Bartholemew Hawkyns my Grandson

of my three garments beyng in the said chamber in ffancher Lane. If the Residue of all my goods not geven nor bequethed after

my debt paid and my mortt fulfilled, I geve and Bequeth unto Sir Cristofer Bronoine vicar of Reynham aforesaid to dis-

pose for my soule and my moder’s soule and all my good friends soules at the thombe ys most necessary to be done for

by the which Sir Cristofer Browone I ordayne and make myn executor. In witness whereof to this my p[re]sent testament

and last will I have sett my seale, geven the day and year above said that wittness Thomas Halloet, John Beobage,

and Frances Binke not others, po pobr me Sir John Hawkins.

Probatum Et probatur quod supradictus testis levavit duas libras apud Lamsith in mense Januarii anno Domini millesimo quingentesimo

octa[vo] in [the presence of] Christofer Browne then executor honoris testamenti de probatum et approbatum et insinuatum et commissa fuit administrata-

[ti]onn bonorum debit dicti defuncti prefato executor de bene & faiht, adminstraitor de pleno & fideli juristario et fini qualitio,

ante mense aug[usti] XX future[o], exhibenis [in] maner’ de pleno, Actio compto reddend ad frader, cumptum debit, [signet] ring found, iurat.

Tanslation:

Proved: And it is proved that the above-said witness raised two pounds at Lambeth in the month of January in the year of the Lord one thousand five hundred

eight in [the presence of ] Christopher Browne then executor honor testament of proved and approved and insinuated and committed was adminministra-

tion of the assets owed to the aforesaid deceased’s [aforsaid estate] an executor of good and faith, an administrator of full and faithful jurisprudence and final quality,

before the month of Aug. 20 [in the] future, presented in full, the action must be returned to [the] brother, [the] account owed, [signet] ring found, he swears [his oath].

Note: Location: Rainham, Essex to Bennet in Settingbourne, Kent is about 30 miles. He has a grandson Bartholomew, who was of age to inherit in 1509, so youngest birth 1488, and a father John, so he was married and entered the church after his wife’s death. So his son had to be about 1465. John had been a member of the Nash family and probably a merchant, with similar loans to other merchants in his family. He didn’t go into the church as a means to escape debts and he likely left people owing him money, which is the whole reason he even has a will. If he was just a poor priest, with no assets, why would he have a will?
