Thomas was born in 1450 in Shropshire, England, the son of Humphrey Hill and Agnes Bird.

He died in 1506 in England.

His wife was Margaret Wilbraham. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their six known children were Joanna (1490-?), Willimus (c1492-1585), Agnes (c1494-?), Rowland (c1498-1561), Elizabeth (1500->1561) and Jane Margaret “Joanna” (c1504-c1565).

!Stylename: Hill, Thomas, of Hodnet [~1450-1506]

!Note: I’m going to move the birthdate for Thomas back a bit from 1460 to 1450. It could even go earlier, like 1440, but we’ll be coservative. The reason is there is no real source for the date and it has him too young for what he is supposed to have done, and too much younger than his siblings.

!Note: This is not the official view but it actually fits and the politiacal reality of the time after Bosworth makes it seem likely that Richard iii’s supporters might attempt to escape, with the plague or sweting sickness as a ready cover.

Hypothesis: Thomas Hill of Hodnet [active 1488–1500] is identical with Thomas Hill, Grocer and Lord Mayor of London [b. ~1440, d. 1485 on paper].

Supporting evidence: identical age and parentage slot; cousin Friar William; naming continuity in daughters and sisters [Elizabeth, Johanna, Alice/Agnes] and sons [William/cousin Fr William]; immediate appearance of wealth and civic connections in Shropshire.

Counter-evidence: differing husbands for London sisters and lack of direct documentary link post-1485.

Status: Unproven but plausible; entered provisionally.

Thomas Hill was the son of Humphrey Hill, or Hull, by Anne, or Agnes, daughter and co-heir of John Bird of Charlton. [1]

1494 Marriage

Thomas Hill married Margaret, daughter of Thomas Wilbraham of Woodhay, co. Chester.[1]

For estimation purposes, assume that the marriage took place the year before the birth of their eldest son Rowland in about 1495. Thus 1494.

Margaret Wilbraham was the daughter of Thomas Wilbraham of Woodhey, Cheshire.[2][3]

Issue

Thomas Hill was the father of these children. Rowland was born about 1495. Assume he is the eldest, and for estimation purposes, date the subsequent births at two year intervals:

Joan or Johanna Hill, b. ca 1497. married John Gratwood. She was the sister and co-heir of Sir Rowland Hill, the first Protestant Lord Mayor of London. She was the daughter of Thomas Hill of Malpas and Hodnet. Her mother was Margaret, daughter of Thomas Wilbraham of Woodhay, co. Chester. [1]

Humphrey Hill, or Hull, as the name was formerly spelt, was the son of Griffith Hull of Buntingsdale and Wlonkeslow by Margaret, or Mary, sistger of Griffith Warren of Ightfield, son of William Hull, the son of Hugh Hull of Hull by Eleanor, daughter and heir of Hugh de Wlonkeslow.
