Biography

John Bird de Cherleton[1] or Chorlton[2] alias Brid of Chorleton[3]

Birth

John was born circa 1382 [at the Inquisition post mortem taken in 1434-5, after his death, John's oldest daughter Katherine was said to be aged 26,[3] so if he was 27 when she was born 1435-26-27].

Parents

Helsby notes in his edition of Ormerod's The History of Cheshire, the mesne manor of Chorlton juxta Malpas passed to the Wevers of Wever by 4 Edward III [25 January 1330-24 January 1331], and the "Wevers probably terminated in an heiress, temp. Ric. II [1377-1399], who may have carried it to one of the Birds of Broxton." A branch of the Bird family were mesne lords under the Breretons.[3]

"The township of Chorlton lies about eight miles north west from Whitchurch in Shropshire; the manor was held by the Birds, in a portion of the barony of Malpas..." [4]

Marriage and Children

John married Katherine, a daughter of David de Malpas,[1] of Hampton and Bickerton, and his wife, Katherine, daughter of Hugh de Bickerton.[2] Ormerod in The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester mistakenly says David and Katherine's daughter's name was Alice.[2] Their oldest daughter, Katherine was born in 1409, so they were married in or before then.[3]

John and Katherine had children:

Katherine, who was the wife of Richard Golborne,[1] born circa 1409 [aged 26 in 1435[3]];

Margaret, who was the wife of Robert Powell of Wrixham,[1] born circa 1413 [aged 22 in 1435[3]];

Agnes,[1] daughter and coheir of John Bird, blood relative and heir of David de Malpas , who was married to Humphrey Hull commonly Hill, de Buntingesdale, the son of Griffin Hull de Hull, co Salop, and of Wlonksslowe, and his wife, Margaret sister of Griffin Warren de Ightfeld, co Salop,[5] born circa 1415 [aged 20 in 1435[3]]; and

Alice, who was the wife of William Honford,[1] [3] Holford,[2] born circa 1419 [aged 16 in 1435[3]].

Death

An inquisition post mortem taken 13 Henry VI [1435] regarding John Brid of Chorleton found he held in demesne, as of fee, the manor of Chorlton, from William, son of William Brereton, by military service, also lands in Shocklache, Horton, Burwardesley, and Cudington. He died the Sunday before the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, which was 26 June, 1435. Katherine aged 26 years, Margaret aged 22 years, Agnes aged 20 years, and Alicia aged 16 years, were his daughters and heirs.[3]
