Notes

Note 1

!Stylename: Hawkins, John III [~1415 - ~1514]

!Notes: Working Summary Hypothesis:

John Hawkins [1415–1514] was a second cousin of Captain John Hawkins and is proposed here as the father of Rector John Hawkins. It is highly plausible that John accompanied Captain John to Devon during the inheritance of the Hankeford estates — not as a formal heir, but as a trusted family supporter. Such relocations commonly involved extended kin to help secure property, manage retainers, and ensure loyalty on newly acquired lands.

He is presumed to have played a role in identifying and supporting his sons’ advancement, possibly working with Captain John to secure the son Rector John’s placement at Exeter College in 1486. Most likely the son Edmund lived in Exeter, Devon. This coordinated family effort helped establish a lasting Hawkins presence in Devonshire, both clerical and landed.

=====================================================================

Unfortunately, this was supposidly discredited by the inclusion of the Fake Joan de Nash, and fake ownership of an estate called Nash in York, except Joan wasn’t fake ans Nash existed in Kent, nit York. The rest “may” be right, assuming his sons died before him as they seem to match real documentation aside from refrences to Nash in York.

=====================================================================

The first of them that I find mention of, is Andrew Hawkins, who had a fair estate in the Liberty of Holdness in the co. of York, as appears by an inquisition taken anno 17 Edward III [1343-4], and left issue by his wife [Fake wife and estate was here, see below], two sons, Richard, and John, the latter of whom purchased divers lands in Boughton in the beggining of the reign of King Richard II [1367-1399].

-

He [John] left issue by Jane his wife, two sons, >>> Thomas <<< who was living in the beginning of King Henry IV’s reign [1399-1413], and

John, who was of Nash and had lands of the gift of William Makenade and Margery his wife, who was daughter and heir of Robert Hanes, and brought her husband such lands as Peter Hanes sold to William Makenade above mentioned. He died at the beginning of K. Henry VIth reign [1422-1461 and 1470-1471, and left issue william Hawkins, who resided at Nash- the 12th year of King Edward IV [1442-1487 so 1454].

Note: Picked birth year so that he was of age for the above mentioned inquisiton in 1343-4.

Note: Could be this Drake, great-grandfather of Sir Francis Drake. It is John’s mother-in-law, Katherine Atwyll, of Rewe, widow, who was deceased. This fits perfectly with the theory that John III went with Captain John to assist him in legal matters with the Hankeford inheritance.

!Note: Two wills are recorded for a John Hawkins in Kent, one dated 1513 and the other 1514 , both in the Rochester Consistory Court. While it is unusual, it was not unprecedented for an individual to have two wills or testamentary documents, especially if they held property in multiple parishes or issued a second will to update or clarify the first.

Given the close timing, shared court, and reasonable geographic proximity of Bromley and West Malling, it is possible that both documents refer to the same individual, with the 1513 will perhaps serving as an earlier draft or a partial bequest, and the 1514 version being the final registration.

No other known John Hawkins from this period in Kent better fits these records, so both wills are provisionally attached to this individual pending further review of their full contents for family names, landholdings, or executors.
