William was born on 26 DEC 1855 in Lowshore, Banff, Stirlingshire, Scotland, the son of Ann Paterson but his father is unknown.
His wife was Helen McKay, who he married on 24 FEB 1882. The place has not been found. Their four known children were Charles McWilliams (1892-1916), Thomas Philip (1899-1977), Maggie Lindsay (1907-1952) and Annie (c1908-?).
