!Notes: Emigration 1853.

!P: Janet Hotchkiss, the eldest daughter of Cornelius and Janet Laird Hotchkiss, was born 22 November 1839 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. As of the 1851 Census, the Hotchkiss family lived in the village of Maggies Haugh. They emigrated to America in 1853. Janet would have been about thirteen or fourteen years old at the time. !P: Martin Sexton was born 6 October 1843 in Ireland. He emigrated to America prior to 1861. !P: On 15 September 1862 Martin Sexton mustered into Co B of the 21st Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers at Hudson City, New Jersey. At the time of his enlistment he was single, but engaged to be married to Janet Hotchkiss, and a resident of Hudson City. He served for a period of nine months. Of the engagements that his unit was involved in, the most notable were two battles at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Private Martin Sexton mustered out on 19 June 1863 at Trenton, New Jersey. !P: Martin and Janet had one child, Margaret [b. 1861], before they were married. Margaret was raised by Granny Hotchkiss. They were married on 28 May 1866 by the Rev. William O'Connor at St.. Peter's Catholic in Westernport, Maryland. Witnesses at the marriage were Peter Goff and Elizabeth Love. On the marriage certificate Janet was listed as Mary Jane Askey. Mary Jane was the Baptismal name given to her the day before the wedding, and Askey was corrupted or shortened form of the name Hotchkiss. !P: The couple lived in Lonaconing, Maryland and Martin worked in the machine shops. Over the next years, four more daughters, Janet [b. 14 June 1867], Mary Ann [b. 18 September 1869], Martha [b. 29 January 1872], and Elizabeth Roger [b. 1874], were born. All of the children were baptized at St.. Peter's Catholic Church, even though Janet was a very active practicing Presbyterian [her family were charter members of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Lonaconing, Maryland]. !P: On the 11 February 1875 Martin Sexton and William Beeman were injured by a runaway on the New Detmold incline plain at the mine. William was killed out right and Martin died about 40 hours later. He was buried on 14 February 1875 at Barton Cemetery in Allegany County, Maryland. !P: Janet never remarried, but continued to provide for her family. Daughter Martha was struck by lightening as a baby and crippled. Janet cared for her daughter until Martha died in 1904. After her husband's death, Janet applied for and received a widow with a dependent child pension from the United States Government. She never lost her Scottish brogue, and would call the young children "bairns". !P: Janet died of pneumonia at her home in Detmold, Maryland on 26 January 1916. She was buried at Barton Cemetery in Allegany County, Maryland.
