Nichlas was born about 1515 in England, the son of Roger Hotchkiss and Elizabeth.
His wife is not known. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their thirteen known children were William (c1532-?), Thomas (c1541-c1582), Mary (c1541-?), Margaret (c1545-?), Johanna (c1547-c1593), Thomas (c1548-c1598), Nicholas (c1549-c1596), John (c1550-c1602), Hugh (1551-?), Alicia (c1553-?), Jocosa (c1554-?), Robert (c1559-?) and John (c1561-c1616).
