He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Mary McDougal, who he married on 12 FEB 1826 in Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Their four known children were John (1826-?), Jean Helen (1828-1908), Robert (1831-?) and Helen (1839-1841).

His second wife was Emily Kidd, who he married on 24 OCT 1847 in Falkirk, Scotland. They had no known children.
