!Notes:

The following are original Hotchkiss ancestors in Scotland before 1800 :

1. Sir James Hotchkiss of Hawkeswood and later Brewer of Edinburgh

2. Cornelius Hotchkiss / Hodgecase of Madeley and Airth

3. Unknown Hotchkiss who had children in Perthshire with no remaining male descendants

4. Emanuel Hotchkiss

I'm going to propose that Janet Penman had twins from Emanuel and John was one of them.

1. John's birthdate is unknown, and Jul 1773 would be within the possible range.

2. All Hotchkiss men with a variety of Emanuel as a first name or middle are either descended from Manal or John.

3. John lived near Airth where the incident took place.

4. This also sort of explains the tendency to use the Huskie version of the surname if just to be different from the other lines.

This one was really hard to place. I tried putting John in James Hotchkss and Elizabeth Cleghorn’s family, but he just didn’t fit. I also tried putting him in Cornelius Hotchkiss and Janet Stewart’s family, but that didn’t work either. There were realy only 3 Hotchkiss famiilies that came to Scotland in that time period, and that brought us to the twins of Emanuel theory. It actually works really well, as it explains the extensive use of Emanuel in his descendants and nowhere else. IT also explains the absense of a baptism, which would have been unlikely otherise at the time.

Hi Rex,

We corresponded some years ago. I linked in the HUSKIE branch to the HOTCHKISS tree. I made the assumption that the John Huskie/Hotchkiss/Erskine who married Helen Henderson was the John christened 1766 at St Cuthberts in Edinburgh, son of the famous brewer James Hotchkiss and Elizabeth Cleghorn.

I have now proved myself wrong in that assumption! I had quite liked having Elizabeth Cleghorn's interesting ancestors: ministers, Covenanters, Lairds of Blebo, Scottish nobility and royalty including St. Margaret, English Plantagenet kings and queens, the Anglo-Saxon Alfred the Great of Wessex, William the Conqueror, French kings back to Charlemagne. It made me feel connected to the history in books. Alas.

The 1766 John Hotchkiss did marry twice as mentioned on your Hotchkiss clan website http://hotchkissclan.org/gen/INDIs/II4162.html#pedi

But he married Mary Pearce [ according to the source below* ] then Ann Hart having one son John. The families were close socially, emotionally and financially with members spread across both households in the censuses. In fact in his will John sr hoped his wife would remember to focus her attention on her own heir now she had one and stop giving so much money away to her sister. He was a very rich man.

Commander Hotchkis married, first, 9 Nov. 1800, Mary, daughter of Rich. Pearce, Esq., co. Westmeath. That lady dying in 1830, he espoused, secondly, in 1832, a daughter of Thos. Hart, Esq., a Major in the Hon.E.I.Co.’s service, by whom he has issue one son.

[ In this source his brothers' death dates are not so accurate. I have not found anything else about his first wife yet. I have also not found his brother David's daughter Mary yet.having]

So I am now wondering about the real parents of John Huskie/Hotchkiss/Erskine who married Helen Henderson. He might be part of the Cornelius' family?

I have attached a partial attempt transcription of John Hotchkiss 's long will and some notes on the careers of himself and his brothers.

Cheers,
