I'm going to propose that Janet Penman had twins and John was one of them.

1. John's birthdate is unknown, and Jul 1773 would be within the possible range.

2. All Hotchkiss men with a variety of Emanuel as a first name are either descended from Manal or John.

3. John lived near Airth where the incident took place.

4. This also sort of explains the tendency to use the Huskie version of the surname if just to be different from the other lines.
