Richard was born in 1882 in Coatbridge, the son of Samuel Ferguson and Elizabeth Hotchkiss.

He died in 1928 in Jamshedpur, India.

His wife was Anna Lange. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their six known children were Samuel (1915-1967), Richard (c1917-?), Ferguson (c1919-?), Victor (c1921-?), Ferguson (c1923-?) and Mike (c1925-?).
