Alexander was born on 22 SEP 1728 in Beath, Scotland, the son of Alexander Penman and Jean Peters.
His wife was Jean Strang, who he married on 15 OCT 1748 in Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Their five known children were Duncan (c1749-?), William (c1752-?), Helen (c1754-?), Marion (c1756-?) and Alexander (1763-?).
