Note: Stratford guild rentals show the same tenant, John Hoggekyns, continuing in the Henley Street / Middle Row market area between 1466 and 1473. Middle Row was demolished in the 1590s because it blocked traffic through the market. So the place where John Hoggekyns had his butcher shop literally no longer exists — it sat where the open High Street market area is today.

Reference: BRT1/2/410

Description:

Grant by John Hues of Stratford upon Auen, 'skynner', and Elizabeth his wife, to John Gylberte, master, Roger Pagette, John Clopton, John Wager, John Bryghtwell, Thomas Wawnewryght, Richard Stowe and John Hoggekyns, aldermen, and William Smythe and John Corveser, proctors of the Gild of the Holy Cross etc. of Stratford, of a tenement in Stratford in Bruggestrete between tenements of the said John Gylberte and John Somer' of London, 'barbour', and extending in length from the said street to the highway called Gylleputtes; and of a shop [with a room over it] in Middelrowe in the tenure of John Hoggekyns, 'bocher', between two shops of the Gild in the tenures of John Curteys and William Curteys respectively

Witnesses: John Oxton, 'capitalis ballivus ville', John Clopton and Thomas Tasker, 'constabularii', Richard Stowe and John Hawkesford, 'subballivi', Roger Palmar, clerk of the Gild and many others

Dated at Stratford, Thursday after the feast of All Saints, 17 Edward IV

Two seals of red wax, broken and defaced

Date: 6 November, 1477

Held by: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, not available at The National Archives

Language: Latin

Physical condition: 10½ by 7¼ inches.

Notes: A list of Guild property is “granted” to people, including John Hawkins, alderman, probably the same as John Hawkins, Bailiff to the King, which includes his “life-lease” [BRT1/2/402] family butcher shop under the witness of [probably] his son John “Hawkesford”, “under the bailiff.” This sounds like it might be passing on the Guild administration of it by enfeoffment of the officers, which would place him among the guild officers administering the property.

Seal lost

Date: 25 March, 1481

Held by: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, not available at The National Archives

Language: Latin

Physical condition: 12½ by 9 inches.

Note: At this point John Hogekyns [Hawkins] is 44 and it is about time for him to appear on his own. He is also the right age to be building a new mansion with his wife. His father is really too old for that role. He has appeared under the name of John Hawkesford, proctor in earlier records, and it was probably necessary to use that name for the role in the document.
