Biography

This profile is part of the Price Name Study.

-

"JOHN, son of Matthew Pryce by Joyce verch Evan Gwynn of Mynachdy, Radnorshire, was sheriff of Montgomery, 1566 and 1586, of Cardigan, 1568, and Member of Parliament for the Montgomery boroughs in three Parliaments of queen Elizabeth. His youngest brother, ARTHUR PRYCE, of Vaynor, Montgomeryshire, was also sheriff in 1578 and Member of Parliament for the boroughs in 1571...."[1]

-

John Pryce married Elizabeth, daughter of Rhys ap Morris ap Owain, of Aberbechan.[2]

-

He "made his will 4 May 1602 when 'somewhat sick in body ... knowing nothing to be more certain than death, nor anything more uncertain than the hour thereof'. The will was proved on 8 Jan. following".[2]

Research Notes

-

Estimated Birth: Previously "about 1544", changed to "before 1544", because according to Wikipedia's article on the John Price who died in 1602, he was "a Justice of the Peace for Montgomeryshire from c.1564 and was appointed High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire for 1565–66."[3] Assuming "c.1564" was because it may have been earlier, this means he was 21 no later than 1564 .

-

Currently, "about 1538" because when son Edward was attached, born before 1544 created an error, since Edward's profile has his birth in 1545. Probably Edward's date is too early, but it currently fits with dates on profiles attached as his wife and son . The profile for John's mother has birth c1525, so 1538 is as early as John's profile can go without causing an error based on her birth year. ~ Noland-165 07:16, 4 April 2022

-

Son Edward: If I'm reading the Dictionary of Welsh Biography article correctly, this John is father of

-

EDWARD, son of John ap Matthew by Elizabeth verch Rees ap Morris of Aberbechan, Montgomeryshire, was sheriff in 1615[1]

-

and if so, that makes his wife "Elizabeth verch Rees ap Morris of Aberbechan, Montgomeryshire"[1]

-

Wife: The Wikipedia article names his wife as "Elizabeth, the daughter of Rhys ap Morris ap Owain, of Aberbechan, near Newtown, with whom he had 4 sons and 4 daughters."[3] So does his HOP bio.[2]

-

The profile for Blayney-2 was detached 28 February 2022, as the only reference found was a footnote in the Visitations of Wales calling her Elizabeth Blaeney.[4] Other sources called his wife Elizabeth ferch Rhys ap Morris.[3][2] The pedigree chart on page 315 of the Visitations of Wales, which shows John's marriage to Elizabeth and their children, also shows her father more fully, as "Rees ap Maurice ap Owen ap Evan Blaeney",[5] explaining how "Elizabeth ferch Rhys..." might be identified as Elizabeth Blaeney. So her profile was reattached on 4 April 2022 .

Sheriff of Montgomeryshire

-

The Dictionary of Welsh Biography notes that the Price family of Newton Hall "supplied seven sheriffs of Montgomeryshire". This John, son of Mattew and Joyce, was Sheriff of Montgomery in 1566 and 1586.[1]

-

A list of Montgomeryshire Sheriffs shows "John Pryce, Newtown" as sheriff in the years 1566 and 1586.[6]

-

The Wikipedia list of High Sheriffs of Montgomeryshire links to a Wikipedia article for John Price who was sheriff in 1566 but not for the John Price who was sheriff in 1586. Wikipedia says of the 1566 sheriff that he died in 1602; that he was the eldest son of Matthew Price; and that he married Elizabeth, the daughter of Rhys ap Morris ap Owain. It does not say that he was the sheriff in 1586.[7]

-

The biography for John Price posted by the History of Parliament Online shows he was "sheriff 1565-6, 1585-6", was husband of "Elizabeth, da. of Rhys ap Morris ap Owain", and was the "1st" son of "Matthew Price of Newtown by his 2nd w. Joan or Joyce and bro. of Arthur".[2]
