Biography

Family background

The only reliable information available about Rotrude's family origins is the indication that Guy, or Wido, lay abbot of Fontenelle assassinated in 743, was a propinquus of Charles Martel. This rather vague term of kinship designates a close relationship through the women: a brother-in-law, a cousin through the women or a cousin by marriage. This Guy is identical to Count Guy, mentioned in 715 as brother of Milon , bishop of Trier, and son of Saint Liévin , bishop of Trier . The latter is known as the ancestor of the Lambertides-Widonides , whose first names show an ancient kinship with the first Robertians . Moreover, Rotrude's first name itself attests to a membership in the Robert family 2 .

This is where the certainties end. In 1989, Christian Settipani echoed the hypotheses of Anton Halbedel, put forward in 1915 and taken up by Jean Depoin, Maurice Chaume and Szabolcs de Vajay : according to them, propinquus would have the meaning of "brother-in-law", so that Guy de Fontenelle would be Rotrude's brother. The result is the following genealogy 3 :

-

see source

-

In his "Addenda to the Ancestors of Charlemagne", he returns to this thesis and approaches that of the professor of medieval history Richard Gerberding, who considers that nothing really obliges the attachment of Rotrude to the Lambertides, and that it is perhaps directly attached to the Robertians. He points out that Charles Martel had three wives and that Guy is perhaps related to one of the other two. He also disputes the analysis of Herbert E. Lemmel who had proposed the kinship between the Lambertides and the Robertians through the Agilolfinges . This gives the following stemma 4 :

-

see source

-

Finally, in his Addenda to the Addenda published in 2000, Christian Settipani completely revises the genealogy of the Robertians and proposes a new stemma 5 :

 -

see source

 -

We see from this last stemma that Guy de Fontenelle is propinquus of Charles Martel, but through Chrotais, the third wife of Charles Martel notes 1 . Rotrude, she, is directly attached to the Robertians, as is Rothilde, and close to the mother of Saint Chrodegang, who has the same first name as a daughter of Rotrude. The link between the Robertians and the Lambertides-Widonides is no longer made by Willigarde, but by Chrolanda or Rolande, married to a son of Saint Liévin.

Husband

No contemporary document names her as the wife of Charles Martel. In 724, the Annales mosellani mention the death of a Ruadtrud. That the death of a woman is mentioned at this time can only mean one thing, that this woman is the wife of a Merovingian king or one of the principal princes of the kingdom. Several facts speak in favor of the hypothesis that this Ruadtrud is the wife of Charles Martel. First of all, the latter remarried shortly after, in 725, with the Bavarian Swanahilde , then, the first name Rotrude appears regularly in the descendants of Charles Martel notes 2 . Finally, a litany from the Liber confraternitatum augiensis gives a list of eight masculine names, which correspond to the first eight Carolingian sovereigns followed by nine feminine first names . The presence of Bernard and Ermengearde and the absence of Pepin I of Aquitaine and Louis the Pious allow us to date the creation of the list between 818 and 838. Ruadtrud appears in the first three names, of which we know that the third is a wife of Charles Martel 7 , 8 .
