Curtis was born on 25 APR 1762 in Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut, the son of Gideon Hinman and Hannah Curtiss.

He died on 22 APR 1826 in Holland Patent, Oneida County, New York.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Martha Russell, who he married on 26 DEC 1782 in Lanesborough, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Their seven known children were Peleg (c1780-1850), Russell (1782-1863), Laura (c1784-?), Huldah (c1786-1843), Wolcott (1789-1872), Sally (1794-1822) and Calvin (c1795-1839).

His second wife was Phoebe Chase, who he married on 11 NOV 1798 in Cheshire, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Their nine known children were Curtis (1799-1869), Morris (1800-1873), Asel (c1802-?), Patty (c1805-?), Betsey (c1806-?), Holland (c1807-?), Gideon Truman (c1809-?), Sherman (c1811-?) and Loved (c1813-?).
