Hanford was born in 1865 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, the son of Asahel Clark Finney and Mary Hanford Edson.
His wife was Maime N. Page. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their three known children were Edson Morris (1893-?), Dorothy Evelyn (1895-?) and Nancy Elizabeth (c1897-?).
