Emmer was born on 28 NOV 1846 in Wilmington, Union Township, Clinton County, Ohio, the son of Michael Woolery and Rosannah Small.

He died on 7 SEP 1915 in Chatham, Sangamon County, Illinois.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Analiza Gorman, who he married on 8 JUL 1866 in Sharonville, Hamilton County, Ohio. Their eight known children were George William (1867-1952), Rosannah (1868-c1947), Mary (1871-c1873), Harry (1872-c1872), Jennie (1874-c1960), Nora Bell (1876-1939), Joseph (1880-1965) and Emmer (1883-1970).

His second wife was Susanna. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. They had no known children.

!Notes: Emmer Woolery was born and raised in Wilmington, Ohio, where he resided until 1866. He served honorably in the 31st Ohio Infantry, Company 1, of the Union Army during the Cival War. He was released from the army, at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, on 20 July 1865. Emmer spent one more year in Wilmington, Ohio following the Civil War.

He was 21 years old when he married Anna Liza Gorman at Sharonville, Ohio, on 8 July 1866. He lived in Sharonville for 18 years until after his wife died. He was 39 when Anna Eliza died at Reading, Ohio, and was buried at Crescentville Cemetery in Reading, Ohio, on 2 July 1884. After his wifes death Emmer left his six children with his in-laws[Raechal and Henry Gorman], for one year. He was 40 years old when he returned to move his family to St.. Louis, Missouri in 1885. He was 42 years old when he moved his family to Iowa for 3 years from 1887 to 1890.

He was 45 years old when he left Iowa [for Illinois] and married for the second time. His new wife was Susannah Barthlow, daughter of James and Rachael Barthlow. He spent 2 years in Greenup, Illinois, until 1892 when he was 47. He then worked in Springfield, Illinois until 1912. He lived in Springfield, Illinois from 1892 until 1902. Then he moved to Chatham, Illinois where he resided from 1902 until his death on 7 September 1915. His age at death from his death certificate was 69 years 11 months nine days.

Emmer worked as a horse dealer. He was a large man, described as over six feet tall and 300 pounds.

Woolery, Emmer, now living retired from native life at Chatham, Ill., was born in Willimington, Ohio, November 28, 1846, and is a son of Michael and Rosanna [Small] Woolary, the former born in Auglaize County, Ohio, in 1812, and the latter born in Waynesville, Ohio, in 1815. The father was a carpenter by trade and for many years lived in Wilmington, where both he and his wife died. He was a soldier in the Black Hawk War. His parents and those of his wife were early settlers of Ohio.

Emmer Woolary spent his childhood in his native State and there received his education. He followed farming until the breaking out of the Civil War, and enlisted, in March, 1864, at Columbus, Ohio, and served to the end of the war, being mustered out at Camp Chase in December, 1865. He had participated in the battles of Chattanooga, Buzzard’s Roost, Big Shanty, Kenesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Jonesboro, and the Siege of Atlanta. He took part in the March to the Sea, and in many skirmishes, serving under Captains Wilkins and Joe Taylor. For three months Mr. Woolary carried messages for his General. During the campaign in Georgia, he was for three months without change of clothing, and edured great hardships. He is an active member of the G.A.R.

At the close of the war Mr. Woolary returned to Ohio, and soon afterward moved to Springfield, Ill., where he worked for twenty years. He has been a resident of Chatham since about 1903 and is one of the best known and most respected citizens of his community. He was married, at Sharonville, Ohio, in July, 1866, to Miss. Annie Gorman, born in Hamilton County, Ohio, daughter of Henry and Rachel Gorman, both of whom spent their entire lives in Ohio, and were farmers. Eight children were born to Mr. Woolery and his wife, of whom six survive: George W. born in Hamilton County, Ohio, July 24, 1867; Rosa, July 14, 1868; Jennie, January 1, 1875; Mary, born in October, 1871, died 1873; Harry, born in July, 1872, died the same year; Joseph, born in October, 1880;Emmer Jr., March 17, 1883; and Nora, July 20, 1876.

Mr. Woolary is a member of the Red Men and in politics is a Democrat, but in local affairs votes for the man rather than the party. He is not a member of any church, but endeavors to follow the Golden Rule in hi actions, and his relations with his fellow men are very pleasant. He has lived retired for several years past, but had previously worked hard all his life and managed his affairs in an able manner, so that he aquired a competency.

Woolary - Died, at 5:30 o’clock, Tuesday evening September 7, 1915, at the residence in this city of complications of diseases. Emmer Woolery, aged 69 years, 11 months and 9 day.

Mr. Woolary was a civil war veteran.

He is survived by his widow, three sons, George, of Kansas, and Joseph and Elmer of Springfield; three daughters, Mrs. William Hindersham, of Alton; Mrs. William Cummings of St. Louis, and Mrs. Thomas Shield of Kansas; one stepson, Virgil Ware, of Brazil, Ind.;twenty-eight grand-children, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. church this Thursday morning. Rev. C.A. Word officiating. Interment in Chatham cemetery.
