Alexander was born on 24 DEC 1775 in Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, the son of William Penman and Janet Izat.
His wife was Mary Borrowman, who he married in ABT 1797. The place has not been found. Their nine known children were Jean (c1798-?), Janet (>1799-1883), Mary (c1803-<1811), William (1805-1885), John (1807-?), Mary (c1811-?), James (1813-?), Alexander (1817-?) and Robert (c1820-1883).
