James was born about 1726 in Ireland, the son of Thomas William Dodds but his mother is unknown.
His wife was Ellen Cochran, who he married in ABT 1758 in County Down, Ulster, Ireland. Their three known children were Thomas (c1748-?), William (1768-1818) and Betsy (c1774-?).
