Mary was born about 1847 in Horningsea, England, the daughter of Walter Pettit and Sarah Green.

Her husband was Charles Butler, who she married on abt 1864 or 1865. The place has not been found. Their eight known children were Lizzie (c1866-?), Walter Samuel (c1868-?), Mary (c1870-?), Charles (c1872-?), Jesse (c1874-?), Laurs (c1876-?), George (c1879-?) and Stephen (c1881-?).
