Charles was born about 1898 in West Carron, Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland, the son of David Stoddart and Helen Ramsay.
His wife was Margaret Brewster. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their four known children were David (c1924-c1994), Helen (c1926-c1968), Robert Harden McIlroy (1928-1988) and Thomas (c1932-c2001).
