David was born in 1905 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the son of Thomas Hotchkiss and Helen Millar.
His wife was Annie Wilson Dow. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were David (1928-?) and Thomas (1930-?).
