Sylvanus was born on 12 FEB 1839 in Stoughton, Massachusetts, the son of Sylvanus Colby Phinney and Mary Elizabeth Russell.
His wife was Elizabeth A. Bodkin, who he married on 28 DEC 1863. The place has not been found. Their two known children were Mary Kate (1864-?) and Colby Washington (1866-?).
