Barnabas was born about 1787 in Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Zaccheus Phinney and Lois Starrett.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Ann Bowlby. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their only known child was George B. (c1830-?).

His second wife was Eunice West, who he married in ABT 1825. The place has not been found. Their two known children were James Edward (1826-1891) and Caleb S. (c1828-?).
