William was born in 1841 in Glasgow, the son of William Yeats and Ann Jaap.

His wife was Mary Fleming Clelland, who he married on 29 DEC 1865 in Cumbernauld. Their seven known children were William (1865-?), Franklin (1867-?), James (1870-?), John (1872-?), Robert (1875-1877), Alexander (1877-?) and Robert (1880-?).
