James was born on 28 APR 1889 in Haggs, Stirlingshire, the son of James Carrick Stevenson and Jean Yeats.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Marion Taylor, who he married on 26 APR 1912 in Polmont. Their three known children were James (1912-?), Alexander Taylor (1915-?) and William John Yeats (1918-1919).

His second wife was Mary Johnston, who he married on 27 DEC 1920 in Edinburgh. Their three known children were Jane Yeats Johnston (1923-?), Charles Franklin (1925-?) and John (c1927-?).
