Owens Sr. - Friday, February 25, 2005 9:37 AM EST CUMBERLAND - Roy Franklin Owens Sr., 86, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at Lions Manor Nursing Home. - Born March 23, 1919, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lewis and Susan [Hotchkiss] Owens. - He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Eleanor [Iser] Owens; five brothers, infant James, infant Clarence, Luther, James, and Henry Owens; and three sisters, Agnes Robosson, Elma Cofield, and Thelma Cofield. - Mr. Owens served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. - Mr. Owens was retired from the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, where he had been a fork-lift operator. - He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene for many years; life member of the Fort Ashby V.F.W., Post 6667; life member of Chapter 579 Military Police; life member of Fort Washington Chapter 2, D.A.V.; and member of Fort Cumberland Post 13, American Legion. - Survivors include his wife, Lucy Self [Headley] Owens; one son, Roy F. Owens Jr. and wife Joann, Cresaptown; three daughters, Linda Parsons and husband Jim, Patterson Creek, Lois Getz, Ridgeley, and Joan Readd and husband Ralph, Ridgeley; a step-daughter, Shirley Roberson and husband Jerry, Cumberland; and four sisters, Margaret Spangler, Colorado, Norma Dennis, Louisiana, Evelyn Ott, Virginia, and Dorotha Bosley, West Virginia. - He was proud of the name "Pappy O." Mr. Owens enjoyed his nine grandchildren, one step-grandchild, and 16 great-grandchildren. - Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St.., Cumberland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. - The funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Gary Barkley, officiating. - Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, where military honors will be accorded by the local combined veterans honor guard. - Serving as pallbearers will be Rich Parsons Jr., Troy Parsons, Corey Parsons, Shannon Readd, Kendall Readd, and David Getz. - Honorary pallbearers will be Richie Parsons III and Kenton Parsons. - Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 508 E.
