He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Catherine McGhie, who he married on 7 OCT 1908 in Motherwell. Their five known children were James (1909-?), Robina Winning (1914-?), Christina Hamilton (1920-?), Catherine McGhie (1922-?) and Janet (1924-1993).

His second wife was Agnes Grant Nisbet, who he married on 28 NOV 1947 in Newarthill. They had no known children.
